and Longitudinal Study of Effects of Transcendental Meditation
Practice on Frontal Power Asymmetry and Frontal Coherence, International
Journal of Neuroscience, 111(7)
Abstract: Two studies investigated
effects of Transcendental Meditation (TM) practice on mental health
and on alpha power asymmetry, gamma power, and frontal coherence.
Frontal coherence, but not power asymmetry, positively correlated
with moral reasoning, emotional stability and inner orientation,
and negatively correlated with anxiety. In a longitudinal TM study,
gamma power and power asymmetry did not change during tasks or
TM practice, while frontal coherence increased linearly during
tasks, and as a step-function during TM-rising to a high level
after 2-months TM practice. These data suggest that individuals
quickly master TM practice. Long-term benefits are seen in activity.
